38% female doctors quit profession in past 5 years

In Pakistan, Dr. Sonia Khan was one of the top students in school and college. She scored very good marks in F.Sc pre-medical; therefore, she got admission in medical college easily.

She achieved her goal and became a doctor after few years. Now, her medicine field is limited to books only that she cannot even read in peace in the presence of her three kids.

She had to end up her career after marriage and now she has moved to Canada with husband and kids.

Sonia is not the only one but many qualified women doctors are led to end their careers at an alarming rate. A total of 38 per cent lady doctors have quit profession in five years from 2011 to 2015.

A ‘doctor bride’ is every one’s first choice as they are considered as perfect mix of working woman and house wife. But many lady doctors are ending up profession to take care of family.

Girls outshine boys in F.Sc exams and medical entry test (MCAT) every year. The lead of girl students in both exams guarantees their admission in MBBS and dental courses whereas the boys remain insecure and worried about it most of the time.

The marked difference in overall results of boys and girls in turn leads to the obvious gap of male and female intake of medical students.

Educators warn, in a few years, boys will be hesitant to opt for the profession and the percentage of fresh male doctors will further decline to a minimal level.

Due to this situation, male students have started feeling heat of being subjected to unjust system of selection for the medical colleges. This fear has inclined them to opt for engineering as their first career choice now, leaving the field open to the female candidates.

A careful data observation of year 2005, it is observed that 11074 female candidates enrolled in MBBS which is 55 per cent of total seats.

They should have been registered as doctors in the year 2011 after five-year MBBS and one year house job when the total number of lady doctors was 53447.

The addition of 2005 enrolled students should increase this total to the tune of 64521 but the number of doctors remained 55084 after one year in 2012.

It indicates that 11074 females were registered as doctors but 9437 lady doctors left the profession or went abroad. Similarly, as many as 10932, 11454, 12000 and 12195 new doctors were added in the year 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively.

The figures indicate that 38 per cent lady doctors left the profession in last five years. The doctors in 2015 should have been 1,11,102 if we add all enrolled students of five years from 2005 to 2010. But the number of doctors is only 68542 till June 2015.

Rehman, a pre-medical student who has repeated F.Sc this year says that he has lost one valuable year of his life in the pursuit to become a doctor, but if he fails to make it to the open merit list this time, he will have to opt a career which he does not like.
Interestingly Hassan, a student of mechanical engineering, says that he was wise enough to apply for an engineering programme in time.

According to the teachers of engineering faculty, the percentage of male candidates for engineering programs is seeing a gradual increase annually.

A class of 150 students has almost 140 male and 10 female students on an average. Educationists says if this trend continues, gender wise balance of doctors will get further disturbed in the days to come.
